about

Solar Sailing is a recording of two New York City funk-jazz stalwarts, reunited after 35 years. On his fourth release, Patrick Butler teams with his old bandleader, legendary keyboardist Ricky Williams.

Truly the last of a breed of musicians who provided the soundtrack to the New York Club scene before DJs and sampled performances–it was just the jukebox or the band in those days and people danced to the bands. Jazz and classical enthusiasts, Rick and Butler would extend the funk cover tunes into more extravagant solos as the night went on, while the drums and bass had to stay in the pocket for the dancers. By 2am, they were rivaling the fusion bands in pushing musical envelopes.

Rick and Butler recorded some commercial demos but aside from a few nights on a cheap cassette player nobody documented this jazz-funk fusion. Back then to do a recording you had to lug a 30lb Teac 4-Track into a club. So in 2011, when Rick came out from Miami to visit Butler in LA, they finally got together in a studio to recreate the sound.
